About the role
The Parliament, a Brussels-based monthly English-language magazine focused on EU politics and public policy, seeks a full-time Journalist to join its growing editorial team. The successful applicant will produce interviews and features for the magazine and online, as well as commissioning and editing opinion and analysis content from politicians, academics, policy experts and freelance writers.
As a full-time, permanent position based in Brussels, this is a rare opportunity to play a key role in the production of a thoughtful, relevant magazine and website, read at the very highest levels of the EU institutions, at a time of fascinating and significant policy challenges and changes.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Write interviews for The Parliament magazine;
- Pitch and write feature stories for the magazine and online;
- Generate ideas for and commission op-eds from influential politicians, academics, activists and more;
- Edit contributor copy;
- Contribute to the magazine’s online presence including uploading content on the CMS and contributing copy to our newsletter;
- Take part in The Parliament events online and in-person if required;
- Participate in editorial meetings and help shape the print magazine each month around specific themes.
Person Specification:
Requirements:
- 2+ years journalism experience in print and/or online;
- An eye for a great story and an energetic curiosity about the world around them;
- Contacts in EU institutions and/or politics, or the willingness to engage and rapidly develop these;
- Strong knowledge of the functioning of EU politics, governmental institutions, and legislative and regulatory processes;
- Excellent written English (additional European languages strongly welcomed);
- Proven skills in writing interviews and features, and editing copy supplied by others;
- Exemplary approach to the production of high-quality, insightful copy to deadline;
- Existing residency in Brussels or the willingness to relocate.
Preferred:
- Working knowledge of French;
- Knowledge of other European languages;
- Previous experience reporting on the EU institutions;
- Experience chairing/hosting events;
- Experience promoting journalistic content via social media.
